What Ontario actually buys

The question of “what vape is best” is really “which one is best for you?” From distillate to diamonds, resin to rosin, there are about as many ways to vape. This guide can’t tell you which one is best, because that depends on you. What it can show you is where the rest of Ontario is landing. Not because that’s where you’ll land, but as a starting reference. These are the ten best-selling vapes in the province, from Headset’s Vapor Pens data, snapshot dated June 3, 2026:

At a glance, disposables look like the clear winner. They take the top two spots. Over the last couple of years we’ve watched them climb from a niche pick to running about even with 510 carts, and the province-wide numbers back it up: across the full top ten it’s a dead-even split, five disposables, five 510 cartridges. So disposables win the head of the market, not the whole category. If someone tells you one format has clearly won, they’re reading half the chart.

What an All-In-One cannabis vape is

An All-In-One cannabis vape, often sold as an AIO disposable vape, packs everything into one sealed device: extract in a tank, a coil to heat it, and a battery to run it, all in a unit that fits a jacket pocket. Take it out of the box and use it. Nothing screws on, nothing gets refilled. Many of the higher-end resin/rosin vapes come with predetermined heat settings specifically for the extract.

Most current AIO disposable vapes recharge over USB-C, so a dead battery isn’t the end of the device. You top it up and keep going until the extract runs out. When the extract is gone, the whole thing is done. That’s the trade: zero setup and nothing to carry, in exchange for a device you replace each time rather than a battery you keep. When it’s spent, it doesn’t have to go in the garbage. Bring your used vape hardware back to the shop, cartridges, batteries, and AIO vapes included, and we recycle all of it. What a 510-thread cartridge is

A 510-thread cartridge is the extract half on its own. The “510” is just the thread size, the industry-standard screw fitting that connects a cartridge to a battery. Nearly every cart and pen battery on the market uses it, which is the whole point: buy one battery, and it works with almost any 510 cartridge you bring home.

The battery is the part you’re investing in: rechargeable, good across many cartridges, and on better models the voltage adjusts. A 510 setup costs more on day one, since you’re buying hardware before your first pull, but that hardware is reusable, and every cartridge after the first skips the device cost. What the two dollars actually buys you

Here’s the gap, using real prices off our shelf rather than a provincial average. Spinach Pufferz liquid diamonds, the best-selling line in Ontario, is $36.99 for the 1g All-In-One and $34.99 for the same 1g in a 510 cartridge. Same brand, same weight, same extract. Two dollars.

Now put the battery back in the picture. That two dollars is what has to pay it off. The cartridge saves you $2 every time you buy one, but you spent $15 to $25 on the battery first, so it takes a while.

Cheaper by (±): a plus means the All-In-One costs you that much less; a minus means the 510 cart does. At a typical $20 battery the two land dead even on your tenth cartridge, and the cart only starts winning on the eleventh.

The exact break-even moves with the battery: a cheap $15 battery pays off by your eighth cart, a $25 one not until your thirteenth. Below that point the All-In-One is simply the cheaper buy. Above it, the cart wins, but slowly.

Carts are better value if you’re a regular. If you’re buying one every few weeks, the All-In-One costs you less, full stop.

The extract matters more than the format

Back to that extract column. The top five sellers in Ontario are all liquid diamonds, in both formats: ranks one and two disposables, three through five 510 carts. Distillate fills out the rest of the list, again in both formats, with live resin alongside.

That’s the axis most format guides skip entirely. Distillate, live resin, and liquid diamonds all cross the disposable/510 line freely. You can get any of the three in either a sealed AIO disposable vape or a screw-on cartridge. Which means the format question and the extract question are separate decisions, and the extract is the one that changes more about what you’re getting.

The difference between them is mostly about flavour, not chemistry. Distillate and liquid diamonds are the most neutral flavour-wise. Live and cured resin/rosin and full-spectrum extracts (FSEs) keep more of the plant’s original taste and aroma, which is a big part of why they sit at the top of the price range. Pick the extract you want first, then decide whether you want it sealed into an All-In-One or screwed onto a battery.

The convenience gap

Cost and extract are the big two, but there’s a third axis no spec sheet captures: how the thing actually lives in your pocket.

An All-In-One is one sealed piece. It drops into a pants pocket, a jacket, or a bag and you forget it’s there until you want it. A 510 setup is two parts screwed together, a battery plus a cartridge, and that’s fussier than it sounds to some people. The screw joint sits proud, it catches on the inside of a tight pocket, and the cartridge can work itself loose or snag on the way out. There’s a discretion angle too, and it’s real for a lot of people. A battery-and-cartridge setup has traditionally been less discreet, obvious as a cannabis vape the moment it’s out. The shape gives it away. However, there are new batteries that are more discreet, like the Nova Hush 2 Pro, the Smyle Labs Car Key Penjamin, and the Smyle Labs DankSaber.

An AIO disposable vape looks much closer to the nicotine vapes that are everywhere now, so it draws less notice. If keeping a low profile matters to you, that’s a point for the All-In-One. If you don’t care who sees it, it’s a non-issue, and the cost and extract math above is what should decide it.

Which format fits which buyer

No universal winner here. It comes down to how you actually buy, not how a vape is supposed to feel. Match yourself to a row:

• You buy one vape a month. The All-In-One is cheaper outright. You’ll likely never hit the battery payback point, so there’s no reason to buy hardware.
• You buy weekly. The math flips. A reusable battery pays for itself inside a couple of months, and every cartridge after that runs you a few dollars less.
• You want to try a lot of different extracts. Some people keep two carts going at once, one for daytime (sativa-leaning) and one for evenings (indica-leaning). Go 510. One battery, swap cartridges as often as you like, no device commitment each time.
• You’d rather not think about charging. Check the AIO disposable vape spec. All recharge over USB-C.
• You lose things. An All-In-One is one object. A 510 setup is a battery you have to keep track of and a cartridge that screws onto it. If your gear tends to wander, fewer parts is the safer bet.
