Liquid diamond vape carts are the highest-potency thing on most vape shelves, and they’ve quietly taken over the category. Here’s the part that trips people up: the diamonds themselves, crystallized THCA, are almost flavourless, exactly like distillate. That flavourlessness is what makes them useful.

A neutral, high-potency base is a blank canvas, and it’s what lets producers load in the big, bold, sweet-and-fruity flavours you’ll never get from the plant alone. So when you reach for diamonds, you’re usually after two things at once: serious potency and loud flavour, and they come together precisely because that base is neutral.

Here’s how it works and how to choose one, without us telling you what to buy.

What They Actually Are

You hear “diamonds” and picture something cooked up in a lab. It’s simpler and way less “Breaking Bad” than that. Liquid diamonds are crystallized THCA (the “diamonds”) dissolved into a terpene-rich liquid (the “sauce”). The diamonds are the plant’s own THCA in its most concentrated form — no synthetic cannabinoids involved.

The process: a hydrocarbon extraction, butane or propane, of fresh or flash-frozen cannabis, processed so the THCA crystallizes out while the liquid is set aside, then the diamonds are melted back in at a controlled ratio. What you end up with is mostly cannabinoid, and that’s your potency. The THCA itself is flavourless, just like distillate, so all the taste is built in afterward with a terpene blend. That flavourless base is what lets a liquid diamond cart taste like tropical fruit or candy so cleanly — nothing’s competing with the added terpenes, so producers can dial the flavour in on purpose.

Myth: Live Resin Is “Better” Because It Has More Flavour

This is where most explanations get it backwards. Diamonds carry a different kind of flavour from live resin, and for a lot of people it’s the one they actually want.

Distillate and diamonds are both neutral, high-potency bases. Distillate is refined down to almost pure THC; diamonds are crystallized THCA. Neither tastes like much on its own, and that blank slate is the feature. It’s what lets producers build big, bold, consistent flavours — the sweet, fruity, candy-forward carts that move fastest — because nothing in the base is competing with the terpenes they add.

Live resin is the opposite bet. It preserves the strain’s own terpenes through flash-freezing, so you get an authentic, true-to-plant profile, usually earthier and more subtle. The trade-off is that you’re locked into whatever that strain actually tastes like, and it tests lower in THC.

So the split comes down to two kinds of flavour: built-to-order boldness from diamonds and distillate, and authentic strain character from live resin. Want a loud tropical punch at 90 per cent? That’s diamonds. Want to taste exactly what the plant tasted like? That’s live resin. Neither’s better. They answer different questions.

Where the Whole Category Is Headed

If distillate-only carts seem harder to find lately, you’re not imagining it. Diamonds hand producers the same neutral, flavour-friendly base as distillate but at higher potency, so they’ve largely taken over the mainstream shelf — distillate-only is becoming the budget exception rather than the default. General Admission, one of the biggest names in Ontario vapes, has built essentially its whole cart lineup around liquid diamonds.

The lines are blurring, too. Diamond-and-live-resin blends are increasingly common, chasing high potency and a fuller flavour in a single cart, and producers mix terpenes to hit a target taste — cannabis-derived, botanical, sometimes synthetic, often a combination. Blends and mixed terpene sources are normal now, and knowing that helps you read a label instead of guessing.

The Brands Worth Knowing in Ontario

A handful of licensed producers make liquid diamond carts here, and they’re not interchangeable. The honest read on three you’ll see most:

Myth: A Cart’s a Cart, the Hardware Doesn’t Matter

The connection usually doesn’t, the guts sometimes do. Almost every liquid diamond cart in Ontario uses a 510 thread, the universal screw-in that fits any standard battery, so compatibility is rarely the issue.

Inside is where they differ. Older designs use a central post to wick the oil; newer postless carts drop that post for a ceramic core, which tends to mean cleaner flavour, fewer clogs, and less leaking. Two carts can look identical and one just hits better, and this is often why. Both still thread onto the same battery, so the difference shows up in how cleanly it performs — worth knowing so you’re not paying up for the word “postless” without understanding what it buys you.

Myth: Crank the Battery for a Bigger Hit

Do this and you’ll ruin the exact thing you paid for. All that built-in flavour comes from terpenes, and terpenes scorch at high heat. Most carts run best in the low-to-mid range, roughly 2.5 to 3.0 volts. Push past that and you cook the terpenes into a harsh, chemical taste — the bold flavour you paid up for, gone. If your battery has adjustable voltage, start at the bottom and creep up until it tastes right.

The oil is also thicker than distillate, and cold makes it worse. Leave a cart in a cold car and it can stiffen up too much to wick properly, giving you weak or burnt hits. Keep it at room temperature, and if it’s been out in the cold, warm it between your palms for 30 seconds before your first pull.
